“The MLC administers blanket mechanical licenses for eligible streaming and download services in the USA and collects royalties due under those licenses which are payed out to music publishers, administrators, self-administered songwriters, composers, and lyricists. The MLC will be collaborating with ARIPO to pay royalties to ARIPO Member State Collective Management Organizations (CMOs) for usage in the USA from the historical unmatched royalties from Digital Service Providers (DSPs). This will transform the economic landscape of creators as they will be able to receive royalties from streaming & downloads”.- @BTwebaze

You may have heard or read about The Mechanical Licensing Collective — or The MLC — at some point over the past few years. And if you have music that is being streamed or downloaded by consumers in the United States through digital service providers (DSPs) like Spotify and Apple Music, it is important that you have a basic understanding of what The MLC is, what it does and how it works with international rightsholders including ex-US CMOs.
