In
2024, the African Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO) launched
its Young Professionals Programme (YPP), a forward-looking initiative aimed at
developing the next generation of Intellectual Property (IP) leaders across
Africa.
The
inaugural cohort brought together four promising young professionals from
across the region: Miss Janette A. Rungo (Mozambique), Young Professional
Economics; Mr. Muhamed L. Ceesay (The Gambia), Young Professional Law; Mr.
Jeremiah J. Kekula (Liberia), Young Professional Civil Engineering; and Mr.
Ramothobi M. Tolo (Lesotho), Young Professional Biotechnology. The full cohort
successfully completed the programme in January 2025 after an intensive and
immersive learning experience.
The
ARIPO YPP is a well-structured and unique on-the-job learning and development
programme designed to groom and nurture high-potential individuals from diverse
academic backgrounds. It focuses on building technical expertise in IP while
also strengthening leadership and administrative capabilities. Through this
approach, participants are equipped to take on higher responsibilities and
contribute meaningfully to institutional and national development.
Throughout
the programme, participants engaged in practical assignments that provided
real-world exposure to IP systems and processes. This hands-on experience
enabled them to deepen their understanding of how IP frameworks support
innovation, creativity, and economic growth. At the same time, the programme
encouraged collaboration, critical thinking, and adaptability across different
disciplines.
The
impact of the programme extends beyond individual growth. By returning to their
home countries with enhanced skills and knowledge, the young professionals are
well positioned to support innovation ecosystems, promote the effective use of
IP, and contribute to socio-economic transformation.
The
success of the first cohort highlights the importance of investing in young
talent and demonstrates ARIPO’s commitment to capacity building across its Member
States. The Young Professionals Programme continues to stand as a strong
foundation for shaping capable, confident, and forward-thinking leaders who
will drive Africa’s development agenda.
